So... anyone out there ever make sourdough bread?

I've been pondering and found a great site called Sourdough Home that gives what looks to be wonderful instructions on making, and maintaining, your own starter.

I'm *this* close to taking the plunge (as soon as I figure out what container I'm going to dedicate to starter ;-) and wanted to see if anyone out there has had any experience.

What I'm afraid of is I'll go through all the trials and tribulations only to find the local yeastie-beasties taste terrible. :-) But I won't know that until I try.

Remember my kielbasa, onions and pepper dish? Well, I had the ingredients for it, but I was also in the middle of a massive laundry project, so I didn't want to mess with it. Plus, all I have are instant potatoes, including some that were left over from lunch.

Then I remembered that I'd been thinking about trying to cook Shepherd's Pie.

You see where I'm going with this.

I cooked the sausage in rings, then lined the bottom of a small loaf pan. It came out roughly three rings high with a few more stuck in here and there. (The pan I used took three rings across and six rings down. It's too hot to look on the bottom to see what size that is. :-)

Then I tossed onions and peppers into the pan, cooked, added seasonings and a little red wine. I kept the total fluid level low for this.

I poured the cooked vegetables and liquid onto the sausage and then covered with the potatoes.

Baked at 350 for about 40 minutes. Could have probably cooked it longer to get a nice brown crust on the top of the potatoes, but I was too hungry. :-)

This is a *great* version of the recipe and the best part is that you can walk away from it while it's cooking in the oven *much* easier than you can when it's cooking on the stove. The downside is the almost complete lack of gravy, but that could probably be corrected. An upside is you could add whole garlic and let it roast inside the casserole.

This would be great with beer bread and could cook in the oven along side it with no problem.

So, I have an old bookcase from Storehouse (I think that's where it's from - it's origins are lost in the mists of time ;-). It's particle board, I think, and has a white laminatey-plasticy-something or other coating on it. It's actually a pretty decent bookcase and I see no reason to get rid of it... but it's, shall we say, less than pristine in appearance. :-)

In short, it's stained and discolored and just generally needs help. I tried one of those bleach pens on it, to see what would happen and, well, nothing. :-) The pen may be old. I just realized I don't have a bottle of Clorox on hand to try, either.

So, here's my question. Have any of you ever successfully cleaned this stuff? I don't even know what kind of paint would work on it. I'm half tempted to buy some contact paper and go for it, but I'd rather be able to actually just *clean* it. Then, if I decide I want to paint, I can, but cleaning is first.

So, anyone out there have any experience doing this?

Trust me on this... watch. Probably not work safe, but maybe. Depends on where you work. :-)

Oh, and this is part of a *series*.

It's a *beautiful*, early spring day in Houston. 62 degrees, crystal clear sky and a shockingly low 38% humidity. Perfect day to be out and about... so I did.

I stuck my iPod in my pocket, put on my walking shoes and went to the grocery store. It's not a terribly long walk, but it was perfect. I also discovered that Eye of the Tiger is great to help me keep my pace up. :-) Dirty Laundry and Gimme Three Steps aren't bad, either. Rockstar is crap for it, but the song's too much fun to skip. :-)

Oh, and Highway to Hell is *terribly* appropriate for standing in the checkout line.

There is a blind item over on Ausiello's blog that I, and many others, are 99.9999% certain is NCIS. I'd lay money on it. Every single item in there rings true. That said, some of us got together last night and talked about possible strategies for helping make the point that we fans would MUCH rather see NCIS retain the services of Mark Harmon and leave Shane Brennan to concentrate on NCIS: Los Angeles.

We need to keep it positive. Suits consider all employees replaceable. We need to let them know that we fans disagree. Some people are far more replaceable than others. Easy as it is, and much as we'd like to, we can't run Brennan down. That will only make his supporters (who are likely high up in production) get defensive. Defensive people are no longer
listening. We've got to focus on the fact that Mark Harmon is not replaceable because *Gibbs* is not replaceable. Gibbs is *the* central cog in the NCIS machine and without Gibbs the whole thing will grind to a halt. While I have no doubt that Michael Weatherly could *easily* carry the lead on a show, *Tony* is not designed to be the lead - that is Gibbs' role. Shane Brennan should be released from his duties on NCIS and allowed to focus fully on building up NCIS: Los Angeles.

We also need to spell out entire names. I know it sounds silly, but words have power and we need to tap into that power. It's easy to let initials pass us by, but harder to let full names go unnoticed. Also, we need to make sure we're spelling them right. Again, it may seem silly, but it's a subtle thing that simply reinforces the message. Misspellings, especially of names, subtly detracts from the message.

Hit every single online media venue you can think of. The CBS boards (I'd start in the "general comments" section), IMDB, TWOP, Buddy TV, EW, TV Guide, you name it. If it's some place that ever mentions NCIS news, hit it and hit it hard. Start threads, comment (appropriately) in existing threads, comment on articles. If your local newspaper has an article on NCIS comment there. Get out your envelopes and postage stamps and start writing letters to CBS. I wish I had the actual names of people who have the power to make or at least sway these kinds of decisions. If anyone can come up with those, please post them. Also, write actual letters to... who? Anyone have any suggestions? TV Guide? Any trade papers we should inundate with letters? (Other than the ones listed below. More is better.) We need to hit as many communications channels as we can. Email, tweets, article comments, snail mail, *carrier* pigeon if we think they'd let them in the door. :-)

See, here's the thing - the more people see something in print? The more they believe it. We need to harness that. Now, the good news is that this is really a no-brainer. Just looking at the sheer number of independent comments to the EW item supporting Mark Harmon over Shane Brennan lets us know we're not whistling in the dark here. The key is to let the suits know they're going to piss off their fan base if they don't pay attention. And to do that we need to gather as many people as possible saying pretty much the same things over and over again. Not so much in the same words, just get the meaning across. We can come up with what amounts to talking points, but use your own words as much as possible.

1. Gibbs *is* NCIS. No Mark Harmon, no Gibbs. No Gibbs, no NCIS.

2. Shane Brennan has a brand new show that needs his full attention as show runner. NCIS also needs the full attention of a show runner. Let Shane Brennan concentrate on his creation, NCIS: Los Angeles, and assign a new, full time show runner to concentrate on the more mature NCIS.

(And, in all fairness, LA *is* getting better. It deserves a solid shot and a dedicated show runner.)

That really is about all there is. I hesitate to include comments on the falling quality of scripts and story lines mostly because I don't think the suits give a damn. They're interested in ratings and how that translates into ad sales and stock prices. If you can find a positive way to talk about that, go for it. :-)

My domestic interests, and skill sets, pretty much begin and end in the kitchen. I'm a damned good cook and I really enjoy doing it. It's something that requires creativity and gut instinct coupled with the ability to follow instructions and to know when you can not follow instructions and still not break something. A lot like writing, now that I think of it. In short, it's tailor made for me. :-)

It's the rest of the home front that presents a problem.

Okay, so. I now have a DVR. I also have a much bigger living room. I *also* have aging joints and stiffening muscles.

I think you see where this is going. :-)

I turn 50 in about three weeks. I do NOT want to keep hobbling around as soon as I stand up or have every muscle in my body aching just because I've been on my feet for several hours for some reason (even in really good, supportive shoes).

So, what I'm looking for is some televised exercise program I can record and use to build strength and flexibility. Bonus points if there are exercises devoted to strengthening knees. :-)

I *have* been in excellent physical shape in the past. I used to be limber and strong and that's been within the past 20 years. The past 10 haven't been as good as they could, but the last five have been murder. Now that I've got my pain under control, I need to make up for time lost while I was in too much agony to do much more than sit. I'm walking a lot more for my cardio, but the stiffness and lack of flexibility are killing me. I now live just over a mile from a shopping center. Five years ago, I wouldn't have thought twice about just popping over there and doing what I needed to do. Now I have to think long and hard about walking a mile and expecting to be able to do anything but sit for a while at the end of it.

I'm sick of that.

So, suggestions? (Note: not spending any money. ;-)

I'm being a complete slacker today as far as unpacking goes. On the other hand, I've been terribly domestic in other ways, a bit of organizing here, a bit of cooking there, figuring out how to use the can opener on my Swiss Army knife, but now I'm vegging out in front of the tube (and may I just say I LOVE the DVR! :-) So, I'm watching Demons on BBCA and I just have to ask. What's with the bringing of grapes to people in the hospital? I've run across it in fic from time to time and just scratched my head, shrugged my shoulders and moved on, but they did it on this show so now I'm really wondering. Grapes? Really? *Why*?

We're heading over to my folks' for the day (in a while) and overnight. I probably won't be around until sometime Saturday afternoon.

The problem with being up in the wee hours of the morning is having the tv on and being "graced" with the ShamWow dance mix commercial.

The choppy thingy has a dance mix, too.

*Very* scary.

I was browsing through my flist for a bit (enjoying my coffee out of my new mug :-) and I was hit by something. No matter where you live, there are always places or things that are cool about your town, but visitors rarely ever know about them. So, tell us something (or several somethings) cool that the tourists never see or wouldn't know about. It could be about where you live now, or about where you're from (and may be visiting at this very moment) or even about some place you lived between your original hometown and now.

I hope everyone's holiday is proceeding nicely, with a minimum of fuss and weather/health-related kerfluffle. :-)

My kid got invited to a performance of the Nutcracker this afternoon so she's out. She just texted me to ask if she could go to dinner with them (they're good friends) and I let her. Christmas Eve isn't a big deal for us and besides, maybe I can get my wrapping finished. :-)

Still haven't heard anything from Mom about tomorrow, but it's not a big deal. She's got one of those cool ovens that can cook a turkey straight from the freezer in just a few hours. Really makes this kind of up-in-the-air-ed-ness easier to handle. For my part, I've got a pot of Christmas chili on the stove for if we're going to be home tomorrow. There's nothing different about it from my regular chili, but when I asked the kid what she'd like to have for dinner if we're home, she asked for my chili. :-) Works for me. It's going to be cold tomorrow (cold for here, folks ;-) so it'll be nice.

This isn't unusual for our family. Now that the youngest kid is, well, my kid and she's spent her life doing two Christmases (one with us, one with her Dad's family), we don't always get together on the 25th.

Mom called tonight to tell me she had to put my Dad back in the hospital. He's in his 80s, so this is no real shocker. It's nothing particularly terrible, just him having a round of weakness and my Mom, in her late 70s, being unable to help him. They've had terrible trouble getting home nursing care (I told them they should have moved into the city instead of the crappy suburb they moved to) so she had to call an ambulance when he fell and couldn't help her get him on his feet. Fortunately, nothing broke and all his blood stayed inside where it belongs. She thinks he'll be home by the weekend, but she's also looking into care facilities. I don't think she knows what she wants to do (and she doesn't take advice well at all).

So, here we go. Nothing like a little family trama drama at Christmas.

Just saw an ad for White Collar (great show, btw) and once again, I'm struck by something. Matthew Bomer (Neal Caffery) could *easily* play Michael Shanks' younger brother.

I also just discovered he's from Spring, which is a northern suburb of Houston. Shoot, we used to play football against his high school (though some of that was before he was born and oh, man, how old I feel right now - I was a junior in high school when he was born ;-). Got his start at the Alley Theater here in Houston. Another local boy makes good story.

Man, they didn't grow 'em that pretty in the northern suburb *I* grew up in. :-)

Ah, Mom Power! You can't beat it.

When my kid turned 16 earlier this month, she scored a bunch of money from various family members. She's trying to get enough together to buy a new iPod since her last one died (well, the *screen* died - she still uses it in her iHome - she can read it well enough to use her play lists). Then, one day she comes to me and says, "Mom, I can't find my birthday money."

*headdesk*

*How* many times have I told her to find a spot and use *that* for her cash? (She doesn't carry a purse and refuses to try.) We determined that she probably "lost" it somewhere in her room, but that's like saying she lost it in a swamp. I'd planned to go through the dirty clothes hamper this weekend, but haven't managed it, yet.

So, anyway, tonight, I needed a pen for something and couldn't find one. So, I ventured into the Great Unknown of her room, figuring I could lay hands on one before something ate me. While I was in there, I poked around a bit, looking for her cash. I spotted a jacket I *vaguely* remembered her wearing when she came back from her dad's with her booty... guess what was in the pocket.

So, it's now tucked under the corner of her pillow for when she comes home from her dad's tonight.

Silly girl. I *told* her to check her jacket pockets. Did she believe me? Hell, no.

MOM RULES!!!!!
